WOMEN’S GOLF
The HU women’s golf team is off to the best start in program history with their showing at Battle at Brookwood on September 5-6.
Playing at Brookwood Golf Club, the Foresters rewrote the history books by setting a new 18-hole team score on Monday by firing a 313. In her HU debut, freshman Grace Dill led Davis’ crew with a three-over-par 75 which ties the program record for lowest 18-hole individual score.
Day two saw Danielle Tinsley lead the charge by matching Dill’s 75 on the way to HU shooting a 322 for a total score of 635, a new 36-hole school record. Tinsley finished the tourney with an 11-over-par 155 to lead the Foresters and finish 7th overall out of the field of 36 golfers.
Three Foresters posted identical scores of 160 to share 15th place which included Dill (75-85), Abby Sheehan (76-84) and Kira Moore (82-78).
Akira Seals turned in a 178 (93-85). One stroke back was Lauren Slottke (90-89) while Lexy Turpchinoff carded a 185 (92-93).
Overall, Coach Patrick Davis was excited about the play of his squad. “We had lots of positive things we can look back on both days. Day one, our 313 team score is a new school record for 18 holes. Our 635, 36-hole total, is a record low for the program as well.
“It was also exciting to see freshman Grace Dill tie the school record for lowest 18-hole round on day one with a 75, and then have junior Danielle Tinsley do the same on day two. I’m also proud of Akira Seals who posted her lowest collegiate score of 85 today. Overall, I am very happy with our effort and commitment to competing and playing for each other.
“We have been working on embracing playing at a higher level and being comfortable in difficult situations on the course, and I think this week helped show our players we can be a team that can compete at a high level.”
Taylor claimed the team title with a 603 followed by Grace (628), HU (635), Indiana Tech (661), Grace B (671) and Saint Francis (678).
Next up Huntington is the Players Club Invitational at the Players Club (Yorktown, Ind.) on September 9-10.
