MEN’S TENNIS

The HU men’s tennis team continued its strong start to the fall season on Saturday, knocking off NCAA Division II opponent UIndy, 4-3, at Klopfenstein Courts. The victory is an impressive early-season result for the Foresters against a Greyhounds program that advanced to the NCAA Division II Men’s Tennis Championship Round of 16 last spring before falling by a narrow 4-3 margin to Azusa Pacific. 

Huntington wasted no time taking control of the match by sweeping doubles play to secure the opening point. The No. 1 tandem of Javier Lopez Real and Julian Tantera rolled to a 6-2 victory over Simon Gruber and Runkai Bai. At No. 2 doubles, the HU tandem of Mateo Batista and Mete Koseoglu earned an identical 6-2 win against Nicolas Balzola and Arda Aroyo. Marco Silveira and Paul Reupke completed the doubles sweep with another 6-2 decision over Mateya Stanisavljevic and Maxime Dierickx. 

In singles action, the Foresters relied on their depth to secure the upset victory. Mateo Batista delivered a strong performance at No. 2 singles, defeating Gruber 6-3, 6-3. Mete Koseoglu added a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles, while Marco Silveira claimed a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5. 

The match featured several tightly contested battles, highlighted by the top flight where Tantera pushed Runkai Bai to a second-set tiebreak before ultimately falling in straight sets. UIndy also claimed wins at Nos. 3 and 6 singles, but Huntington’s doubles sweep proved to be the difference as the Foresters secured the 4-3 team victory.

The Foresters have opened the fall season with wins over Cedarville, Indiana University East, and UIndy and will look to build on that momentum as they continue their fall schedule next Saturday at Davenport at 1:00pm.
